In 1941, the Army Air Forces explored the possibility of using modified versions of civil light aircraft for liaison and communications duties. The idea proved to be very useful and by 1942 contracts with several companies were in place. The Stinson Company supplied a slightly larger and heavier version of their Model 105 Voyager under the designation L-5. Several different models were produced with varying types of equipment and furnishings. The B model was equipped with an extra-large door for service as a front-line ambulance aircraft. The Sentinel served in the Air Force into the 1950s. Many eventually found their way to the Civil Air Patrol or into civilian hands.
