Classes

You can choose to add one of the following classes to your visit to Pima Air and Space Museum. These classes are led by our Education Coordinator and are designed to add an extra level of learning to your visit. Any class can be held off-site at a school/youth group venue. Please note offsite classes must be held in a public space, as we do not come to private residents.

All Classes must be booked two weeks prior to your visit. Classes are not offered Sundays or Mondays.

Engineering Challenges

Students will be given an engineering challenge to complete. These challenges are designed to be completed in groups of 2-4 and take 30 minutes from start to finish. Limit 35 students per time slot.

Engineering Challenge Topics: 

  • Cargo Plane Challenge– (K-12) Students will design and develop a paper cargo plane capable of carrying a load of paper clips.
  • Parachute Drop Challenge– (K-12) Students will design and develop a parachute capable of safely delivering an egg to a targeted drop zone.
  • Moon Lander Challenge– (K-12) Students will design and develop a lightweight moon lander capable of landing an astronaut safely on the ground.

    Aviation Classes 

    Museum staff will lead students in a hands-on activity.  All materials will be provided for the museum activity. These are designed to be completed in groups of 3-4 and take 45 minutes from start to finish. Limit 35 students per time slot.

    Aviation Class Topics: 

    • Things That Fly! – (PreK-3rd Grade) Students discuss different things that can fly see how hot air balloons, helicopters, gliders, and rockets all fly differently.
    • Four Forces of Flight– (4th-9th Grade) Students discuss forces, Newton’s Laws of Motion, and flight. They will explore each of the four forces involved in flight and then use that knowledge to build a straw and paper glider.
    • Tuskegee Airmen– (7th– 12th Grade) Students get up close to a P-51 Mustang as they discuss the history of the Tuskegee Airmen. They will then explore how principles of flight from WWII have implications in modern space exploration in a hands-on activity.

    Mini Paper Airplane Fly-off

    Ready, Set, Fly into an hour of fun with our mini–Paper Airplane fly-off!  You can host the event at your location or the museum.  Your students will learn to Fold a paper airplane using basic the principles of flight. After they build their plane, we will hold a contest to see who the farthest-flying paper airplane is! The lesson and contest will be 90 minutes and will require teacher participation.

    Rules:

    • Maximum number of participants: 100
    • Time to Fold: 20 minutes.
    • One sheet of paper (20lb) per plane
      • No tape, staples, paper clips, etc.
    • Plane must have two wings.
    • First and last names must be written on the plane.
    • Distance measured from the start line to where the plane first touches the ground (not slides)
      • Measured from the middle of the throwing lane.
    • Judges’ rulings and measurements are final.
    • Only one throw per participant
      • No rethrows

    Requirements:

    • Hosted at Museum
      • At least five people from your organization willing to be judges
      • List of participants organized by last name
        • Please provide a digital copy to the museum at least 24 hours before your event
        • Participants will throw in alphabetical order
      • Hosted at Your Location
        • INDOOR space at least 100ft x 50ft
          • Gym, cafeteria, etc.
          • May be smaller with elementary-age students (K-5th)
        • At least five people from your organization willing to be judges, scorekeepers, etc.
        • List of participants organized by last name
          • Please provide digital copy to the museum at least 24 hours before your event
            • Participants will throw in alphabetical order
          • Alternately, you can pre-number the participants if you are prevented from providing names
            • You will be responsible for assigning numbers to participants and letting them know BEFORE the competition begins
