A picture of the Schweizer TG-3A

The TG-3A was derived from Schweizer’s SGS 2-12 civilian high-performance sailplane.  The aircraft is of all-wood construction with a fabric covering.  The Army evaluated two XTG-3s in 1942 and eventually ordered 110 of them to train combat glider pilots.  Cadets were given five to six hours of instruction in the Schweizer before going on to the bigger troop-carrying gliders they would fly into combat.
