SAAB RF 35 Draken

The Saab 35 Draken is a Swedish fighter-interceptor developed and built by Svenska Aeroplan AB (Saab) between 1955 and 1974. As jet fighter technology evolved during the Cold War, Sweden recognized the need for a supersonic fighter capable of intercepting bombers at higher altitudes and engaging fighter aircraft. Designed with double delta wings, the Saab 35 Draken was the first combat-aircraft to reach Mach 2 speeds at level flight, and the first jet to complete the tactical cobra maneuver.

The Swedish word “Draken” has two separate meanings, “the dragon,” or “the kite.” It is believed the name was coined when the prototype appeared as a paper kite from above. Saab received export requests for the Draken prior to the jets’ completion in the 1950s. In response, Saab designed multiple variants of the Draken for export. The Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF) purchased over 50 Draken jets in three different variants. The F-35, single-seat attack version; the RF-35, single-seat reconnaissance prototype with camera nose; and the TF-35, two-seat trainer aircraft.
