Introduced in the late 1960s, the SHK-1 was one of the last and best wood construction Open-Class gliders built. It was considered the best in its class for several years before being outpaced by newer types built of fiberglass. The SHK was designed in West Germany and first flew in 1965. A total of 59 were built before 1970.
